The Line Is Never Busy

“Just call my name…”
Those words from an old ’90s song by Allison Williams came back to me this morning in prayer. I thought about how quickly I am to reach for my phone—scrolling through contacts for my dad, siblings, children, and close friends. I have access to them all, yet I don’t always get everyone on the line when I call. Some calls go to voicemail. Others ring and ring. But then, there are a few—you know the ones—who answer without fail.
I try to be that for my children and closest friends. I want them to know that when they call me, I’ll answer. (Except maybe after 10 p.m. when my phone goes off … most nights. 😅)

When someone calls or texts me, I have a choice— I can answer, or I can wait. This morning, while I was praying, I received a text from an opportunist at 5:30 a.m. It actually angered me. Most people know that I’m in prayer or Bible study at that hour, so texting me then feels intrusive. Now, after 6 a.m.? You could be in the clear if it’s not one of the many days I’ve run overtime. I had the option to call back later or delay my response until another day.
It brought to mind Genesis 4:26, when “men began to call on the name of the Lord.” There’s something powerful about that — the intentionality of calling on His name. My daughter can be in the same house with me, but until I call her name, she doesn’t respond because presence alone isn’t enough.
When God calls, He doesn’t just want us nearby. He wants a Relationship, Recognition, and a Response.

Unlike human relationships, God never misses a call.

Jer 33:3
Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things which you do not know.

Gen 4:26
Then men began to call on the name of the Lord

Unlike us, God never misses a call. He promises it.

He has given us direct access— no voicemail, no call waiting, no “Please hold.”
Our heavenly Father doesn’t screen calls.
He’s not too busy, too tired, or too distracted.
But here’s the amazing part? He doesn’t just answer—He reveals.

You don’t need a strong signal; you just need a sincere heart.

The other day, I was searching for a book I bought years ago. I looked everywhere—shelves, closets, corners, under sofas. (I looked on one of my bookshelves and out in the garage multiple times in the same spot) Finally, I whispered, “Holy Spirit, You know exactly where this book is. Will You show me, please?”
Moments later, I found myself rummaging through some old storage bins in the garage, and lo and behold, there it was. That exact book I’d been hunting for. It was like laying my eyes on a piece of gold! 🤣 (figuratively) I smiled from ear to ear because I had evidence; this wasn’t just a coincidence, it was communication. God hears and He answers us when we call on Him.
It reminded me that He’s not just available for crises—He’s present for the small things too.

We all have hundreds of contacts in our phones, but most of us only use about 5%. Why? Because not everyone adds value. Trying to talk to everyone in my contact list would leave me feeling drained, stuck in circular conversations that don’t align with my purpose.
Likewise, God has given us unlimited access to Himself through Jesus, but many believers only use a fraction of that access. We reach for everything else before we reach for Him.
Prayer isn’t our last resort—it’s our first response.
He’s not an emergency contact. He’s our eternal connection.

You may have His number saved—meaning you know the verses, the worship songs, the church routines… but are you using the access you’ve been given?
He’s waiting for your call.
He’ll always answer.
And His line is never busy.

So go ahead. Call His Name.
Steal away for a moment alone with Him. It’ll be well worth your time. He’s just a call away.

There are so many songs about “Call me, satisfaction guaranteed!”
“Call me.. Call me on the line.. any, any time..”
While the songs talk about people, Jesus had me contemplating this as I read over the question I’m supposed to post tomorrow. I decided to post this first. I’m not sure if I’ll still post tomorrow, but it’s highly likely now, as it’s become a habit, but I couldn’t help getting these words out! I hope it helps someone!
